White Light/ White Heat

The Velvet Underground: Their music is most easily defined as "Art Rock" they experimented with a unique mixture of performance art and pop receptivity. Initially, produced by Andy Warhol, the band performances were an avant-garde light show. Andy added slide machines that swept up the walls and ceilings, the screens often played his movies on the screen. He turned their act into a hothouse red by inserting a gelatin strip in the projector. Strobe lights, too, were adjusted and were winking at the audience with computer-like precision every second. Nico joined the band in 1966, becoming the new type of female superstar.

“Baby Jane and Edie were both outgoing, American, social, bright, excited, chatty—whereas Nico was weird and untalkative.” –Popism: the Warhol Sixties
